TITLE: Sandstone Erosion #6
LOCATION: Salt Point State Park, Sonoma County, California
DESCRIPTION: The exact process of these unique “honey-comb”
formations in
sandstone is not entirely clear. Called tafoni (which means cavern
in Italian) the waves
and salt spray leave salt crystals on the sandstones. Salt and water
interacts with the
cement between the sand grains, and in fractures in the rock. It
hardens
portions and loosens others, creating the patterns.
